This article examines the main aspects of interaction between municipal candidates and residents of Kanonersky island in St. Petersburg. The study was conducted between the summer and autumn of 2014, during the the pre-election campaign for municipal offices. The author seizes the period of active political struggle between the more rigid ‘system’ authorities and more active ‘non-system’ opposition. Political communication is considered from a relational perspective that helps to identify cultural aspects of interaction. Using the works of the relational sociologist A. Mische, we highlight a number of conversational mechanisms which were used by opponents during the political competition. Findings are based on qualitative analysis of interviews, social networks and observations obtained in the course of empirical research. Refs 9. Figs 2.
