THE PERCEPTION OF ENVIRONMENTAL RISKS: EXPERT ASSESSMENTS AND PUBLIC OPINION

The article discusses the problems of perception and social interpretations of environmental risks. The author analyzes various approaches in modern theory and practice of risk analysis based on the concepts of Beckmann and Giddens, and defines the features of the objective environment surrounding the inhabitants of modern cities, the basic characteristics of ecological risk as a social construct, and its relationship with the phenomenon of trust. The article also formulates the problem of contradictions in the opinions of environmental experts and the population as a whole, which is complicates the formation of an effective sustainable urban development strategy. The author examines the case of Cherepovets in the context of contradictory interpretations regarding risks in local communities. We also present the results of a study showing such discrepancies and analyze the elements of social cohesion and differences between groups presented. Refs 14.
